A Year in Review: 2018 trends
December 13, 2018
Before we begin embracing all that 2019 will offer when it comes to home building trends, let’s take a quick look in the rearview mirror. This year was filled with interesting finishes, shapes, colors and more. Time to recap!
Max-imalistic approach
2017 was the year of the minimalist, but 2018 was quite the opposite. Less did not equal more this year. Home designers were all about incorporating more pieces and mixing patterns and colors. Think using bright colors for large pieces of furniture like in the canary yellow couch shown below. 2018 was also a time for pairing wallpaper and rugs in the same space - bold move!
The color purple
Well, sort of. Purple has long been known as one that portrays royalty, nobility and luxury. Those looking to spruce up their homes, turned to a shade of this color for all kinds of things this year. Lavender was all the rage in 2018, replacing the oh-so-popular millennial pink of 2017. From curtains and rugs to furniture and lamps, the light purple hue could be found just about anywhere.
Goodbye silver, hello gold
After many, many years of stainless steel and silver accents being the way to go, golden brass tones stepped into the spotlight this year. Faucets, door knobs and drawer handles could be found donned with this eye-catching color of old.
Tiles get taller
Subway tiles, typically used for bathroom floors and showers or for kitchen backsplashes, have been around for years. However, they have changed a bit as of late. Instead of the small squares or rectangles that are traditionally used, larger blocks have made their way into the spotlight creating a clean modern look. Another added bonus? When larger blocks are used, less grout is needed, which makes for easier install and maintenance.
