Common mistakes new homeowners make
January 30, 2019
Congratulations! You just purchased your new home. Owning a home is a dream come true for most people, but it’s no secret that much responsibility comes with having your own house. There are several things to keep in mind in order to avoid common mistakes made by new homeowners. Let us break a few down for you!
DON’T let sprinklers spray against your house
Make sure your sprinkler heads are facing away from your home’s exterior. You’ll want to check them often to make sure they haven’t shifted! When sprinklers spray the outside of your home, it can lead to rotted walls or can even cause the insulation in your walls to get wet.
DO pay attention to your washing machine
A leaking washer is one of the most common culprits of water damage in a home. It’s wise to regularly check your water hose to make sure it isn’t cracked or kinked. Replacement hoses are reasonably priced, so go ahead and buy an extra to have on hand!
DON’T overload kitchen cabinets
Your upper kitchen cabinets are durable, but you don’t want to take any chances. Too much weight from stored dishes in your upper cabinets could cause the cabinet to reach its maximum weight capacity. Make it a point to evenly distribute the weight in your upper cabinets, and choose lower cabinets for heavier items.
DO use bathroom and laundry room vent fans
Ventilation fans improve indoor air quality by venting moist air outside, which helps prevent mold and mildew growth. Moisture is most common in your bathroom and laundry room. When these two rooms are in use, make sure to flip on the vent fan to prevent water vapor from getting into your drywall or even your electrical outlets.
